Watch out for the Customs & Excise people as well! I used to ship a lot
of stuff back and forth between my folks and myself (I=92m British, =
living
in Brooklyn, NY), and the customs charges, on top of the shipping
charges made it all *very* expensive! And that was a few years ago.=20

I never figured out how to avoid these charges. Particularly with the
big =93consumer=94 shippers (Fedex, UPS, British Air, United, etc); all
these guys pay the taxes, charge it back to you and let you dispute it
with the customs folks, internationally, at your leisure.

I also investigated freight costs, and they were more reasonable, but
took forever. You also have to package it really well (for some
furniture I made for =93me Mam=94, the shipper recommended wrapping the
whole thing in =BC=94 (3mm) plywood with a frame (that customs could =
easily
remove) made of bits of 2x1 (not sure of the metric equivalent).
Needless to say, the charges added up to more than the furniture! I
couldn=92t afford it as I knew I was getting laid off at work, so the
shipping charges ensured Mom got a book instead!=20

No chance for cheaper prices as long as you insist on Air Freight.  Air
freight is measured length X width X height X weight, result not
affordable.  The only way to get it down is via sea freight. Smallest
shipment is one cubic meter and should cost somewhere around the 250
-300 range. Add to this import tax, port charges and you should be in
the 400 dollars.

I always let the sender use USPS if possible. As far as I know they are
the cheapest and have good service.

But the packages I have shipped were fairly small, never had such a big
shipment. I know Martin Ingold had some large shipments in the past,
maybe he has some usefull tips.
