[simpits-tech] MM5451 LED Driver

Volker, did you ever get a chance to look at your circuit? I'd like to
get a schematic from you if you have the chance.

To anyone else, I was organizing my electronic component (caps,
resistors etc.) this weekend and I have some 5V voltage regulators left
over from some previous projects. I went back and looked at those
previous project schematics (had nothing to do with pit building) to see
how they are wired together in circuit and saw that one circuit had a
diode in line with the external power source with a small capacitor off
to the side (usually a 9V DC converter, i.e. "wall wart" that is center
positive) and another had a bridge rectifier in the circuit. Can some
one explain what these are for (diodes, rectifiers etc..) and how could
I go about making a simple circuit for use with this project (or any
other project) that utilizes these 9V DC converters? Also, could one
use a computer power supply as a source of power instead of the 9V DC
converter? Do you have to have a special circuitry before you run this
voltage into the chip? How does one control the current (amps) that
flows in your circuit? These have +5V and +12V connections, are these
types of supplies suitable to power these circuits? I know these are
probably basic electronics knowledge, but was curious on how to do this
myself without burning the house down. Is there a good book I could get
that will explain the basics (I had basic stuff in college like V=IR and
all that stuff) of power and designing simple circuits and stuff like
that.

Thanks
Jay

Hi Jay,
I use robs great driver with 2 mm5451 for a long time and hope I can
give you the information you need to build the circuit. For the power
supply I use 6 volt (6v) with 200 milliampere (200ma). I run it on one
machine with one parallel port and have around 60 different led (low
power leds, plan leds, high intensity leds). I give you more information
(how to connect it and so on) at the weekend because I must take al look
at my circuit first, if you like I can upload pictures of the circuit.
In the meantime you can take
a look at the circuit in action, go the simpits member file "other -
general" and take a look at my upload pictures lights, ohp, closer and
lefside.jpg.
