Funny you should say this but my wife and I both felt the same thing,
survivor (which I have not watched the last 2).

But I suppose you have to understand the target audience.  At what point
do you get it too technical that it goes over everyone's head, or keep
it entertaining enough to appeal to a mass audience. 

I think its worth a couple of more tries.
