That's probably not one of my brighter ideas - you can cook the pot wiper 
if you're not careful.

I'd hook it up to a multi-meter that's set to the scale of the pot and 
clip one lead to the wiper and then one to the other lead on the pot - 
check to see if the value changes as you turn the pot.  Check both ends of 
the pot.
