Hmm... I had some success driving a KE73 with an encoder. Provided it's the
mechanical contacting type of encoder you may well find it works - sort of.
I can't remember the specifics.

I do have a 36X sitting on my desk (at work) at the moment and I can try
that with an encoder for you tomorrow if you like?
