Rick, I don't think you understand how it works. :)
The backlight of an LCD monitor isn't strong enough to project all but the
faintest amount of light through the lens system. By removing the LCD
panel from the case, you're allowing the incredibly bright light from the
projector to "be" the backlight. The fan is needed to prevent the
incredibly intense light from the projector from doing damage to the
delicate LCD panel.
