What about the large "grinding" noise that was coming from the back of the
plane?  Did that not strike them as odd?

Oh yeah and forgot one little tidbit:

They said afterwards that their FIRST indication that something was wrong
was the engines spooling down (because they were FODding out due to, I
dunno, eating asphalt).

The fact that they were sitting 10-12 feet lower than normal apparently did
not strike them as odd.
