Justin,

It probably is a thermostat on the lamp housing, not a diode.
It would be right close to the lamp itself and if it is like the
ones on ours, it has a oval flange, a black cylindrical body
and two wires coming off of it. Ours are made by Klixon,
a division of Texas Instruments (same division that makes
aviation circuit breakers). These can be bought to open at a
certain temperature and reset after cooling. After a bunch of
cycles, the contacts pit and do not make.
