John,

The mask is designed to be taken apart.  Just do it slowly and carefully.
Clean with alcohol.  If you want to do it right, get some Win-to-green
smelling alcohol from your dentist.  The use that for the nitrous oxide
masks they use.  Gives it that minty fresh smell.  ;-)

When you dismantle it you will see that the mask has an exhaust port valve
and an inlet port valve.  Air moves into the mask from the hose and out
through the outlet port valve when you exhale.

The valves are simply circular rubber sheets with a stem on them to hold
them into the plastic frame.  Go slow when you separate the rubber from the
frame.  The stem will pull out with a little force.  If it breaks, you need
to order new valves since the rubber will deteriorate over time.  Actually,
they are neoprene if memory serves.  They should last a good long time, but
you have no idea how old the mask is.
