i used enamel paint, the type that smells of tolulene - often used in model
building.
when the 2nd coat was applied, it wrinkled and crazed like nobody's
business. i applied the 2nd coat well after 24 hours under moderate humidity
and perfect temperature.

Wait, if you used enamel paint, it probably reacted to the plastic.  You can
usually remove the paint with brake fluid (an old plastic modeller trick)
and it should be OK.  You probably need to find a black primer that will
stop the orange peel look.  Remember that the top of enamel may be dry, but
the underside is still wet for several days.
