Even so, backwards-compatibility is something software designers usually try 
to maintain. Retaining support for old software is one thing, because 
upgrading software isn't too tough. But once you have hardware units that 
you know are out there and being used, it makes good business sense to 
ensure the user doesn't have to buy new hardware to support the new 
software, because they probably won't.

But from all I've heard of Chester so far, I'm he'll probably come through. 
I know I'm planning on using some phidgets for my project, based on the 
reviews I've gotten from you guys.
