About option 2....

You might run into a very thick wall with this option as most of the
lcd-screen i've dissected have the controllers mounted on the back of
the lcd panel and the light tubes is located in one side....

This will be a problem as the connectors to the lcd is this "rubber"
type and not wires and are not easily relocated

2, If I can't get No1 to work then it's off to the department of drastic

measures!
- Image generator, forget 4" LCD's.... What about a 15" LCD..which are 
getting cheaper by the hour?
I figure, rip the back of the LCD, shine honking big light through,
focus 
with lenses...easy huh?
