[simpits-tech] Using real instruments

That is one of the first questions asked by most simpit builders the answer
is yes and no. Many of the instruments used in a real aircraft are powered
by various things for example an air speed indicator maybe powered by the
force of the air moving through a pitot tube. Other instruments measure
hydraulic pressure and they are powered by the force of the fluid moving.
Try to remember basic properties of matter sometimes fluids are non
compressible by definition. Other instruments are powered by the AC
generator used in the aircraft many aircraft use 400 Hz AC at various
voltages such as 12V, 24 V and 48V. Then there are instruments and lamps as
well that may use DC voltages. Never mind the fact that some instruments
will require syncro's to drive them as well. There are many reasons to
acquire the original instruments however and many of the instruments can be
driven as they are in the aircraft if you are willing to both do the work to
understand how they originally functioned ad design the needed electronics
to drive them in a simulator.

You may have noticed by now much of the talk is devoted to how individuals
have managed to get instruments to function in their simpits and I suspect
we all have a story to tell about how we managed to get some instrument or
other to function.

Sorry that I can not help you in how to get a real DC 10 gauge to operate.
Hang in there and start saving those needed parts to get your pit a going.

Keep 'em Flying
