My opinion of strain gages:

I've dealt with "load beams" for years in my work.  A load beam is a metal
beam with strain gages on it.  While the strain gages are cheap, the whole
system can cost the same as LVDTs and much more prone to temperature affects
and mechanical calibration drift.  I think they're finicky.

Craig, I've seen recently in stores a weight scale (for dieting) that uses
strain gauges for the weight reading, is this something you could look at?
