Also, a LVDT is a "linear displacement transducer" (the family of devices)
which confused me at first. :)  These things are very accurate and robust.
I see why they're used in A/C.  They are pricey; about $80 each for the
transducers and hundreds for off-the-shelf signal conditioners.  These show

I've rigged up a mechanism that could be used as a poor man's LVDT using a
potentiometer.  While not as accurate as a LVDT, and would have the usual
reliability issues of a POT, it worked quite well:
