When they have have hundreds of worn out fighters I
guess they have to do something with them. And like it
or not, the F-16A is now old too. I seem to remember
hearing something about old F-16's having wingbox
problems. I've been to AMARC and there were a bunch of
old F-16's, F-14's, F-15's, F-18's, and a whole lot of
F-4's in storage.

They do use purpose built target drones, but they are
required by law to shoot at full sized targets too,
for size realism. FYI, a QF-16 being shot at wouldn't
have a pilot it it either. In tests with QF-4's there
is a manned QF-4 following the drone QF-4 to visually
make sure the drone is flying properly.

Oh I agree the F-16 is a fine plane, and frankly I am
suprise that the
military is wasting this thing on target practice. As
much as I like the
F-4, it is old and uses old tech so I can understand
why they would be
more inclined to trash it (even though other countries
are reworking it
into a viable modern fighting machine).

Why can't they just design a purpose built target
drone? It could be
built very cheaply, and could easily turn with the
F-16's and other
fighters (or could be set up to significantly out turn
it, since it
would be lighter, plus excessive g forces would be
less of a concern
since there's no pilot).
