[simpits-tech] Combat Flight Simulator 3

We are at a point in time (been there before) where the software (all the
new features in DirextX) is getting ahead on the current hardware. I have a
pretty fast machine Athlon XP 2000+/512Mb/GF4 and noticed I tried to run
UT2003 with all the settings max-ed. It crawls but it looks unbelievable.
When you turn off most of the new features (tri-linear filtering, hi-res
textures etc.) it runs smooth as a baby.

I guess we wouldn't have much fun if Falcon 5 were to come out now (with all
the screen candy we want it to have). We wouldn't have the hardware to run
it. Even now F4 only delivers just enough FPS (@1600x1200) on my system to
be snappy enough.

We need new generation graphic chipsets and faster CPU/FSB/MEM (64-bit?). So
maybe in a year or two? Maybe the still foggy F5 story will be a whole lot
clearer by then.

I don't have CFS3 so I can't try it.

The one person on the list who wasn't real crazy about CFS3 complained about
low performance, which I assume would be alleviated by this fix. From what
little I read while browsing netwings.org it looks like a lot of people are
returning CFS3. I suspect it is mainly due to out-of-the-box performance
being low.
