Well a rotary pot will be much more robust.  Typical linear slide pots have
an expected life of 10,000 actuation's.  Rotary pots are typically rated at
100,000.

Additionally, linear slide pots are very sensitive to dirt and have little
protection from dirt entry.

I use sliding pots as a last resort and when I have some time will
investigate some of the Hall Effect linear sensors out there.  Honeywell
makes one I want to experiment with sometime.
