One problem with sending keystrokes.... 

in one active window pressing 'A' means something different than
pressing 'A' in an other window....

And how do you know what state the switch is in, take the autobreaks in
msfs you will not know how many time to press the key to get it to max,
where as just setting it to max is much easier....

Just 2 reasons, on top of my head....
