I love this group, lots of good ideas and thanks to all those that have
thrown in their $0.02 (US). I like the foam, mold and fiberglass idea
and am mentally toying with that right now. Roy, the bendy MDF sounds
good, my only fear would be splitting it trying to screw it in, I think
that would have to me glued, which wouldn't be an issue if it bends
enough. I could make my own bendy MDF with my table saw if I was slow
and careful, but you really need a radial arm saw to do that evenly and
safely. Hmmm, may give me a reason to talk the misses into letting me
have one. I am going to have to build a work shop to make my pit which
will then require a room of its own which I can use the work shop to
build! Ah yes , the master plan comes together ;-)

I've just come back from my local B&Q (UK equivalent of a Home Depot)
and
had a quick look to see what flavours of MDF they stocked. The thinnest
was 6mm which you sinmply will NOT get to bend anything like as much as
you'd need to for a 'pit.

What they dod have though was 6mm 'bendy' MDF which is just regulat MDF
with a load of kerf cuts on one face. This stuff really does bend
amazingly well - I had a good play in the store :)

The price was about $7.50 for a 4'x2' sheet.

Roy.
