I'm going to guess that drive E: is the last drive letter in use on your system?
 XM will, by default, use the last drive found for its swap.  I'd be tempted to
follow John's advice in
http://www.simpits.org/pipermail/gem-dev/2006-March/000977.html -- configure it
to use something else -- if SUBST is still broken in FreeDOS.

I suspect DESKTOP.APP isn't being found, although I'd actually expect the "To
continue, insert your GEM DESKTOP diskette in drive A and click OK, or click
Cancel to return to DOS." alert instead.  Where have you got DESKTOP.APP?  Prior
to GEM/3 it lived in the \GEMDESK directory, so unless John changed that
expectation I'd try putting it there.

[I'm afraid I haven't had a chance to look at John's changes yet -- real life
got in the way of tinkering, as it so often does.]
