  GEM/XM is based on the GEM/2 codebase. In such systems, the VDI uses 
FCB functions to access files, rather than file handles. Looks like there's
a problem with FreeDOS's FCB implementation.
  Now you've got source, you could rip out the FCB stuff and replace it with
file handle I/O; or you could take the matter up with whoever's responsible
for the FreeDOS kernel.
