I did get a clarification:

"It's actually a bombsight.  Even without an internal gun, the 
plane was provisioned to carry rockets, gun pods (MK-4 for the USMC/USN) 
and also required a pipper for bombing. That's what the optical unit was 
for."

That's the gadget he needs a photo of. :)
