[simpits-tech] Threads. HATE 'EM.

I'm trying to construct a 3D model of an M36x2 thread. For the curious,
that's the thread used by the TM Warthog and F-16 stick grip assemblies.

In order to correctly build the model that I can then in turn print, I
need to know how big the thread needs to be and what the diameter is of
the surface I'm either cutting thread into or attaching it to.

>From what I've read, metric threads have a 60 degree angle to them.

The formula I found (http://www.metrication.com/engineering/threads.htm)
seems to say that the total height of the thread is 0.866 * P where P is
the pitch of the thread (2mm in this case).

So theoretically, my thread depth/height would be 1.732mm. Correct?

When I measure the threaded base of my Warthog, I get a diameter of 35.82
or so. Pretty close to the 36mm I'd expect when you account for the
designed-in flattening of the thread apex.

So in order to create external threads, should I start with a "post" with
a diameter of 34.268 and then add the threads to that?

For internal threads, would it be a hole 36mm and then cut the thread into
it using a 60 degree triangle, 1.732mm tall?

Thanks!

g.
