I did some checking on EarthLCD and you're right, the prices for the 
"right" sized displays is pretty steep.  However, becuase there is a lot 
of room around the display, you could use a used 14" or 15" LCD panel 
behind the instrument panel.  You'd have to rotate the image displayed of 
course, but at that point you're working with custom software anyway.
