I think it is primarily due to the fact that the crimp connectors for 
cannon style plugs is a lot more mechanically complex than the kind you 
use for DE style connectors.

The last time I purchased crimp on connectors for DE style connectors, I 
paid .05c for the sockets and .04c for the pins.
