For $500 you could buy a used knee-mill or even a used Bridgeport!  A
trashed Bridgeport can hold .003² tolerance!!!

Rockwell used to make a knee-mill that rocks.  You should be able to find
one for that price with tooling.

You still need to add the CNC stuff.  That is the down side.
