Hey all,

I just got bit by the WWI aviation bug again, and began yearning for the good 'ol days of Red Baron 3D... I started poking around online, and to my amazement the 7-year-old sim is still kicking strong!!!

There is a group called Promised Land that has a mod for sale called Full Canvas Jacket which gives the game a complete rework, and they are working on FCJ2 which will add many more planes. And yes, it's really in the works RIGHT NOW, not just "it was 'in the works' when they stopped updating their website."

Also, while I don't usually condone this sort of thing, it seems to be ok with whoever owns the rights now as it is right out in the open on a well known site, but RB3D is available for download at http://www.wings-of-valor.net/ - look under "resources" and "Get red baron 3d." Not so bad when you consider all the money has been made off this game already - they obviously aren't selling any new copies anymore. Only other place to get the game is off eBay, and from what I've heard that's pretty hit-or-miss.

If you download you do miss out on the in-game movies, but they aren't critical. Nothing storyline related, just things like when you get a medal, there's a short movie of a guy getting a medal, etc.

Now that I've got it again, I'm wondering out the possibility of a simple generic WWI cockpit.... hmmm.......
