Thanks for the cleaner link.
I'll look for it.  I presume I have to take off the electronics, but do I 
need to remove the flapper valves?

I did some checking with some friends that are still firefighters where I 
worked. It seems with all the junk that is normally in a fire, they now have to 
concern themselves with pathogens, either from others or terrorist actions. 
They still use MSA cleaner:

but also clean in an ultrasonic bath to fully clean every last nook and 
cranny. They say this stuff can be used in a manual wash as well, they do so if the 
mask has not been used in a while. This stuff will remove all gook and smell 
and does not attack the mask. They do take the breathing tube off of the mask 
and when cleaned in the ultrasonic bath, the exhaust flapper and its cover. If 
enough people are using masks in their simulator, one person could buy the 
bottle and sell smaller bottles from it to other simmers.
