1/8" is a REALLY small diameter for a shaft for something you're going to 
turn. 

3/16" or 4.5mm (about the same) is the smallest I ever saw I think, for a 
rotary or a pot. You may have to settle for sanding that 1/16" off the shaft if 
there's no way to drill or ream the hole in the knob out from 1/8 to 3/16"
