Sounds like the pilot misjudged his turn to final.  When I was stationed at
Eglin AFB in the late 70's the 33rd was just getting their F-15's,
converting from F-4's.  It was great fun to watch Eagles in the pattern
practicing landings with that dirtied up, steep slicing left turn to final
from base, rolling wings level just in time for the mains to touch down
cleanly.  More of a combat approach, and looked cool too.  Also looked damn
dangerous in case the pilot misjudged his altitude and rate of descent.
