Thanks Gene,

I noticed on some real panel photos that they have what
appears to be a translucent material around the rotary switch
cutouts to backlight the knobs, is this also paint?

Allen, the real panels are clear plastic with a white paint
layer followed
by a black outer coat.  The engraving process is either a
photo-etch
process that's very similar to how circuit boards are made, or
a
multi-pass laser ablation process.
