Balloon? Ha! I did my first 25 hours of dual instruction hanging from a kite
with one hand while my instructor threw rocks at me...

Actually that would have almost been preferable to real life. My dad (about
50 hours worth of instruction from him) is a bit harsh when you mess up, but
I can land a C172 anywhere. Pavement is a luxury. So is a horizontal
surface. "Stay in ground effect until you clear that herd of cattle up
there" was heard more than once.
