How small does this have to be , it is possible to do it with a energise to hold relay with a latch and a re energise to de activate the holding coil,

im thinking along the lines of old relay logic  but i think your aiming at a ic level circuit.

Someone posted a general answer, I forget who, and mentioned they could come up with a schematic for it given a little time. Anyone remember who it was, and any chance they could post said schematic? I finally broke down and bought a new calculator, so I'm quite ready to start hacking the old one to bits. :)
