OK, I found a resistor on an old circuit board - used soldering iron to very
gently remove it, hooked it up - still NADT! (Not A Damn Thing)

Then -- oops! I dropped the resistor - where did it go? Damn! Those things
are tiny!

A resistor is typical a round thingie with color marks expressing the
value
