"I feel your pain"!

Even with my experience of running a large network (and revamping its
backup/restore systems at least twice), I managed to trash my hard drive
(with some help from a virus writer and a hacker - both of whom I'd be
more than happy to do nasty things to if I ever find out who they are).
Sometimes circumstances just conspire against you! (Or so it seems). And
I didn't take a backup. (Really embarrassed grin, here).

I've sent some arcane stuff to various data recovery houses with good
results. In the past I've had excellent service with OnTrack
(http://www.ontrack.com); I haven't had cause to use them for a while,
so I don't know if their service is still as good as it used to be.

For PC backups, I have started using "BackUp My PC" from Stomp. Get the
professional version - or whatever they call it. The one from the store
- not the download. For an extra $10 or so you get a reasonably
comprehensive manual and the CD. Which is useful when your HD goes
south...

I use CD's and DVD's for my backups. I've had too many tapes, of any
type, stretch and ruin too many backups for me to trust them completely.
I also have 3 HD's in my machine, so I backup the data from D:
(Documents...) to my "Program Files" drive, and if I'm particularly
paranoid, I also backup to the "C:\Documents and Settings" folder.

Apologies for being long-winded!

/Ian
