Sean, thing brings up something that you might want to try.

The primary trick to a projector is the optics, right?  Well why not get
an inexpensive, commercially available Opaque Projector?  You just lay a
suitably sized LCD panel face down on the unit and back light it with a
strong light source.  You'll have to cool it of course, you don't want to
start boiling the LCD panel.  I think this should work pretty well.  Rob
and I are going to give it a shot in a limited form this weekend if we've
got the time.
