[simpits-tech] Sim landing vs Real thing

I've spent a lot of time watching T-38's land at Vance
AFB in Enid Oklahoma. We sit on a dirt road at the end
of the runways and they fly right over the top of you,
in the winter you can definitely feel the heat of the
engines! I got some good video footage doing this. :)
We also got to where we could predict if the pilot was
going to make a good landing while he was still out on
base. After a while it was easy to tell how well that
student pilot was doing. It is cool to watch,
especially when they start flying in formation.

I know flying formation in FS98 really helped make it
easy to fly in the motion based C-17 sim. In FS I
would fly formation on a dynamic scenery F-15.
The motion of the C-17 sim was outstanding, I could
feel little changes in the aircraft. I also felt a
reaction to my control inputs that helped me fly with
finesse. And of Course getting back On Topic, landings
were a breeze compared to desktop flying. But I think
I would take a motionless sim that has a huge display
system than a motion base with a small screen. I think
the large life size visuals make more of an impact on
the landings than other factors, you can see
accurately how close to the ground you are. That's
just my preference. That being said, I understand what
you said about the buffet. It's simply another cue
that us simpitters are trying to replicate.

--------------------------------------------------
The T-38 is a hard aircraft to land. Once you roll of
the =
perch and start the final turn, you are on the edge of
a stall. You =
often fly the final turn with a slight tickle of a
buffet. Two little =
buffet and you over shoot, too much and you die. One
of the hardest =
things for a student pilot to do was to learn the feel
of this buffet. =
It was done by feel.
