Roy:

Early on in the F-15 project Gene and I received several emails from folks
telling us how wrong it was to not be going about the project restoring
structural items as new. We looked at the project not as restoration but as
art. What is our intended goal to create a simulator, not a restoration.
Should we have endeavored to go the restoration route there would have been
a long road to travel to get to this point. The skin would have needed to be
removed to allow us to repair damaged stringers and the repaired or new skin
reattached all of this prior to getting to the objective. We estimated that
it would have taken 3 to 5 years to get it to that level of restoration that
we could not afford to go that route. Our intent never was to restore it to
flying status, so the project lent itself very easily to taking the short
cuts. Strip out the existing wiring, clean the fuselage then see what
repairs were needed. Often we are forced to say, how might we fake it,
cheaply.

The purist are never there with their purses opened so their voices are not
heard very loudly. this project as you are soon to learn has so many
challenges that if you are able to find a short cut take it. Should you find
that it doesn't work as expected look for the alternative. We have found
that experimentation is a great way to learn how to over come the obstacles
placed in our path.

Keep 'em Flying
