It's very real.  One of our techs at work worked for Wright-Patt and
specifically helped develop this base.  He confirmed it with me.  He
believes that it was ergonomics.

He also said that those bases cost between $40,000 and $50,000 each when
new!

I expect to beat that price handily.  ;-)
