Folks, just a quick update on the progress of my C172 Radio project.
Ive completed the panel design artwork and drilling diagram. Drilled and
mounted the radio into the chassis.
I was surprised at how accurately I could can drill this stuff. I
printed out and glued the drilling diagram to the plastic sheet (4.5mm
clear perspecs). Then drilled all the various holes (all 124 of them!!).
A couple of minutes washing in warm soapy water saw all the drilling
diagram come off, and a really nice panel ready for components. Easy.
Next is the graphics.
I want backlit panels. The first plan is to print a negative image using
my inkjet. The reason for inkjet is that the coverage is better than
toner from a laser. The downside is that the ink doesnt dry that well
and it always a little tacky. My solution to this is to spray paint the
negative on the back with white enamel paint (doing that tomorrow). This
will give me the white lettering and graphics on the inside of the
sheet. Turn it over, cut ou the holes for the 7seg LED's in the right
place, and glue and mount on the panel face. Hope it works, will let you
all know.

The panel itself is designed to mount on a chassis (see pixs) so that
it can be either panel mounted of stand alone (much like the GoFlight
kit). This version is mounted in the standalone chassis, but undo the 4
screws and the stand comes away, and the panel will mount directly into
the (planned) C172 panel.

Im finalising the artwork and backlighting details now, and them should
have some more photo's of it up and running. Picture are available,
checkout them out on my website (HYPERLINK
"http://www.chrisb.co.nz"www.chrisb.co.nz) Under simulator section,
Phidgets & C172 radio.

Cheers
Chris.
