I missed the start of this thread so my message might
not be relevent but in Australia Jaycar has a PC
controlled stepper motor kit for sale. It includes a
stepper and costs about $AU50 (part# WC-7502). 

Building something like this might help to get you
started. And if it's not suitable you'll still have
the stepper at the end.
