Stig, that's why big input matrices like EPIC and the 0/256/0 Phidget use
diodes.  If you check out
http://www.simpits.org/fileproc/files/ematrix.png you'll see what mean.
By using the diodes as illustrated, you don't get the vanishing row
problem.  You could close all 256 switches and still accurately
interrogate the state of an individual switch.
