The next step in head mounted LCD displays is selective virtual reality
over the viewing area.

This has been tried for things like surgery where the surgeon can see
both the patient and a VR image painted on sections of his field of view.

For us, you would program an area in 3-D space that you do not want the
virtual world to be painted (the inside of your cockpit). As you gaze
out, any area that you can see that lies inside the cockpit would be
left clear, that is, no image would be presented to the LCD and you
would be able to see through the LCD glass. Areas outside the cockpit
boundary would be replaced with the VR image in the LCD. So, as your
gaze crosses the boundary you will see part of the LCD fill with the VR
image and the rest would be transparent so you can see and operate your
controls.

A computer is needed to provide the image switching function by
recognizing the area that is inside your cockpit and that which is
outside your cockpit. A small visor mounted camera is used by the
computer to tell where you are facing and how much of the image is to be
kept and what is to be painted as VR.
