The impedance is different on the mic side, that's why the 9V and other 
interesting goodies are needed. The headset is just a straight convert.

Hmmmm is this a civilian headset? Someone told me the impedence was way
different from a PC. I was under the impression it would ruin the sound
card, or the headset, or both...or at least not work.

Can't you turn off noise cancellation?
