As to what synchros are mainly used for....


You'll find them in anything that needs some torque to operate.  Typically
this will be the ADI, HSI, eletric altimeters, fuel totalizers, etc.  IF
it's got a geartrain in it, chances are pretty high that there is a
synchro reciever involved somewhere.
