{"id":382,"date":"2015-07-04T07:08:41","date_gmt":"2015-07-04T15:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/?p=382"},"modified":"2015-07-05T11:27:54","modified_gmt":"2015-07-05T19:27:54","slug":"a-little-upper-panel-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/?p=382","title":{"rendered":"A little upper panel work&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned before, the instrument panel on the Bf-109K4 (and some G models) consists of three parts.\u00a0 An upper &#8220;casting&#8221;, a main panel and a blind flying panel.<\/p>\n<p>Since I had the day off today, I took a little time to get some work done before it got too hot in the shop to work.<\/p>\n<p>The original panel mounts that I created aren&#8217;t going to work with the current cockpit design, so some months ago, I fabricated some new panel mounting brackets on my 3D printer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/old-style-bracket.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-383\" src=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/old-style-bracket-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"old style bracket\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/old-style-bracket-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/old-style-bracket-1024x778.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The green part is the original bracket I printed last year when I first started poking at this project.\u00a0 The small white part is a drill template, which is also 3D printed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In order to use the new bracket design, I needed to drill a hole in the upper panel &#8220;casting&#8221;.\u00a0 Since it had to be 100% accurate, I used the drawing from the part I CNC cut to make a little drill guide template with.\u00a0 It turned out perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>When I made the new brackets, I decided to use brass heat-set inserts in the bottom of each one.\u00a0 A properly set heat-set insert is nearly impossible to tear out and they&#8217;re perfect for when you need to use a machine screw in plastic.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_384\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/blurry-inserts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-384\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-384\" src=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/blurry-inserts-300x162.jpg\" alt=\"Phone camera fails again.\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/blurry-inserts-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/blurry-inserts-1024x553.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phone camera fails again.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The focus in the photo above ain&#8217;t so hot, but you get the idea.\u00a0 The #8-32 inserts I used are from McMaster-Carr and the part number is 93365A140.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t need to buy their expensive insertion tool &#8211;
