{"id":365,"date":"2015-06-07T13:07:30","date_gmt":"2015-06-07T21:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/?p=365"},"modified":"2019-06-25T07:36:41","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T15:36:41","slug":"oh-god-another-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/?p=365","title":{"rendered":"Oh god, ANOTHER one?!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yep.\u00a0 Another one.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always been dissatisfied with the design compromises I made with the Series One cockpit.\u00a0 It was &#8220;109-ish&#8221;, but not as good as it could have been.\u00a0 Life events and other projects have consumed my time and I never thought I&#8217;d get around to creating as good a design as I knew I could have.\u00a0 Well that all got turned on its head last year when a friend of mine from Australia started throwing CAD drawings at me for Bf-109 parts.<\/p>\n<p>He started small.\u00a0 &#8220;Have a few instrument panel drawings&#8221;, he says.\u00a0 I should&#8217;ve known better.\u00a0 My first &#8220;uh oh&#8221; moment came when he sent me some Bf-109K4 panel drawings.\u00a0 It turns out that due to war shortages of aluminum, the companies building the Bf-109K4 (and some G marks) were using <em>wood<\/em> for the instrument panels!\u00a0 I also learned that the Bf-109K4 as well as the G models used a three part panel.\u00a0 There was an upper casting (carving?) that held the SZKK3 ammo counters, the gunsight mount, clock and MG151 lamps.\u00a0 The lower panel contained &#8220;misc&#8221; instruments and the third component held the &#8220;blind flying&#8221; instruments.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Because the original instrument panel was made of wood, I strongly suspected that it wouldn&#8217;t be that hard to get a pretty damn good looking replica using some 3D printed components and all the 2d work done on my ShopBot.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what a real Bf-109K4 instrument panel looks like &#8211; I wish I knew the owner of this fine display! Bf-109K4 instrument panel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ross had been throwing bezel ring models at me and I printed a few that ended up in the panel shown above.<\/p>\n<p>He kept tempting me with piece after piece.\u00a0 I finally told him, &#8220;Look, until you can scrape up good drawings for the windscreen framing, I&#8217;m not going to be tempted by your relentless torture-by-drawings.&#8221;\u00a0 I was hoping that would put the matter to rest.\u00a0 I&#8217;d NEVER come across good windscreen drawings in all the research I&#8217;d done for the Series One project, so I figured I was pretty safe.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah.\u00a0 That worked.\u00a0 Not.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t a week before he dropped a 3D model of a G\/K series windscreen frame in my lap, ready for slicing and dicing in SolidWorks.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s an early version of what he sent me:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_366\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/windscreen-k.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-366\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-366\" src=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/windscreen-k-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"Early Bf-109G\/K windscreen model\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/windscreen-k-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/windscreen-k-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/windscreen-k.jpg 1205w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Early Bf-109G\/K windscreen model<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I knew at that point that I was staring into the depths of a bottomless rabbit hole.\u00a0 I had thrown down the gauntlet and Ross casually picked it up and says, &#8220;Ya dropped this, mate.&#8221;\u00a0 He lives on the bottom of the planet and I&#8217;m quite sure I could hear him snickering.\u00a0 Loudly.<\/p>\n<p>I started doing more research and discovered that a TON of mechanical drawings had escaped the clutches of EADS in the years since I&#8217;d done my original research work on the Series One.\u00a0 Most were crappy, low-resolution scans.\u00a0 However, there was enough data in there that it was looking like doing a really good, 1:1 scale Bf-109 cockpit could be realistically accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d joined a few Bf-109 &#8220;fan&#8221; groups on Facebook that Ross turned me on to.\u00a0 This lead me to running into a guy named Espen Revheim via some of the Bf-109 groups I belonged to.\u00a0 He&#8217;d built himself a Bf-109G6 cockpit section that looks SO good, my first reaction was &#8220;Oh bull.\u00a0 He&#8217;s restored a war wreck.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no way that&#8217;s scratch built.&#8221;\u00a0 Then I saw the photo with the CH rudder pedals inside the cockpit and my head exploded.\u00a0 He HAD scratch built it!\u00a0 It turns out that he had easy access to a Bf-109G6 that was undergoing restoration, just down the road.\u00a0 He&#8217;d leveraged that access to get the dimensional data he needed in order to build his simulator cockpit.\u00a0 I took a chance and asked him if he could get me dimensions on the windscreen framework.\u00a0 A short time later, dimensioned photos showed up and the last nail was driven home.\u00a0 I was going to be building a Bf-109K4 flight simulator cockpit.<\/p>\n<p>The dimensions that Espen sent allowed me to refine the model that Ross had created so I could get it as close to the real thing as I could.\u00a0 This project isn&#8217;t going to be a &#8220;kinda-109&#8221;, it&#8217;s going to be as physically close to the real thing as I can possibly get it.\u00a0 I&#8217;m treating it as a 1:1 scale model building project first, and a flight simulator project second.<\/p>\n<p>After three full revisions of the windscreen design, I ended up with a four part windscreen assembly that could be made from 18 and 12mm Baltic Birch plywood.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_371\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Windscreen-Assembly-Rev-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-371\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-371\" src=\"http:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Windscreen-Assembly-Rev-3-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"Final windscreen design\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Windscreen-Assembly-Rev-3-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Windscreen-Assembly-Rev-3-1024x528.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.simpits.org\/geneb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Windscreen-Assembly-Rev-3.jpg 1710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Final windscreen design<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The tricky part of the windscreen build was going to be the bevel cuts that have to be made.\u00a0 The windscreen sides must be beveled in 12 degrees along the long edge and 17 degrees along the short (bottom) edge.\u00a0 The face frame needed to be beveled 20 degrees in from two different directions.\u00a0 I ended up creating alignment jigs that were the same size &amp; this was just a test fit to make sure that I got all the components cut properly.\u00a0 For comparison, check out this real, newly manufactured, Bf-109K4 windscreen by the fine crew at Arsenal 45.
