Sanding will mot produce blemishes on the back side of the Lexan. Try a sample piece and you will see.

Just lightly sand the backside with a 400 or 320 grit paper. Then, apply Krylon paint that is approved for plastic. All will be well. If you don’t, the paint will peel off in time, even if it is not touched.

thanks for the input on my painting problem. some things i did not make clear (so to speak):

i'm painting the panels on the backside, but looking at them from the front. if i try to sand the backside, i'm afraid i'll be looking at sanding marks from the front side.

the lexan has been amazingly resistant to chemical action, and i did manage to remove the paint once without _much_ trouble. i introduced more scratches with the mechanics of the removal process, itself. the tolulene didn't seem to touch it at all. i really think the paint reacted with itself, and because it wasn't "attached" to the lexan, managed to lift itself off fairly easily.

i'm not concerned with incredible adhesion, since the painted side will be on the back of the panel (and protected from any scratches, or things that will scratch it).

this is definitely a case of reading all the labels to find an appropriate match.

that, and lots of testing on scrap materials. lexan is _definitely_ a different animal from styrene or even plexiglass.

thanks again,
