From jjmessenger at yahoo.com Mon Oct 1 18:10:58 2012 From: jjmessenger at yahoo.com (Justin Messenger) Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2012 18:10:58 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [simpits-tech] Cockpit-Fest USA Message-ID: <1349140258.14015.YahooMailNeo@web140205.mail.bf1.yahoo.com> The event went well and plans are under way for another one in the spring. The museum director was both?surprised and inspired by the enthusiasm of the exhibitors and he hopes the event will contiue to grow. ? The awards went to; ? Steve Blevins F-4 Phantom - Stearman Award for Best Aircraft Cockpit. Steve Cannaby B-52 Stratofortress - Flight Safety Award for Best Simulator Cockpit. Steve Cannaby B-52 Stratofortress - Most dramatic restoration award. Dewey Larson A-7 Corsair - People's Choice outdoor exhibit. Matt Bailey home built simulator - People's Choice indoor exhibit. Chris Woodul - Spirit of Cockpit-Fest Award. ? Steve Blevins had a fantastic Stearman sunset flight Saturday evening for his award. ? Matt Baily it was?a blast meeting you and to fly your sim. I love your python skills!! :) I look forward to many more conversations with you. I am worn out from serious lack of sleep but it was well worth it. I was surprised?so many Viperpit members flew in from out of State and it was hard to stop visiting and to go to bed. Several?of us are getting together again at Babes Chicken for dinner this Saturday evening after the Ft. Worth/Alliance airshow. Photos will be forth coming. This is in my old website: http://phoenixcomm.net/~phnx2000/sim/library.shtml just click on the Suncom logo. There are the links and pics of the hardware. In my sim I'm using both of them with my own bases, and all the guts have been pulled as I'm not going to use the parts. Question: if you position a couple magnets around a Hall sensor, exactly how much of a complete rotation can the sensor read? IOW, if you rotate the sensor (or the magnets around the sensor) 360*, will you get a relatively linear resistance curve out of the sensor? I'm guessing if you started with the sensor in a position to read lowest (lowest resistance, basically), then at 180* the resistance would be highest, and as you continued the rotation, resistance would start going down again until returning to the original starting point. No? If Hall sensors work something like this, then I think I may have a very interesting use for them. What I'm really wondering is if I can actually get usable readings if I rotate magnets in a complete 360* circle around the sensor? So you tried exactly this and it worked? The great thing about these sensors is they are tiny, weigh practically nothing, and could measure position of something without introducing any mechanical load or requiring intrusive mechanical interfacing with the thing being measured. As a matter of fact it had occurred to me that I might use two or more sensors to cover 360*. Now if the response of the sensors at 180* does follow a steady, predictable sine angle, I can use trig functions in my code to account for it. I think it is time to order some sensors! Matt ---- wledzian1 at comcast.net wrote: > A hall effect sensor returns signal proportional to the strength of the magnetic field through the sensor element. This strength varies as the sine of the angle between the field lines and the sensor element, measured parallel to the sensor. That is to say, the sensor will output the least voltage when the field is perpendicular to the sensor, and most voltage when it is again perpendicular 180? away. The response is not linear. It is reasonably linear if you limit the range to +/- 45? or so, and usable to 180? if you account for the sinusoidal nature and back-calculate an angle. If you have two sensors at right angles within the field, you can use their readings to calculate an exact angular position over 360?. > > -Wayne > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: dabigboy at cox.net > To: "Simulator Cockpit Builder's List" > Sent: Monday, October 22, 2012 6:02:22 PM > Subject: Re: [simpits-tech] Hall effect sensor question > > > ---- Roy Coates wrote: > > > > I'm sure I did.
